Symbol Making

Apr 21, 2019

Hey folks – I suggest you read this entire email, as there are some important details toward the end.

I was at a lumber store todayand part of my conversation with the person assisting me was about what sort of hours they would be open over the course of this weekend. At one point, this person was trying to get their “Easter terminology” straight, but I suspected they were in unfamiliar territory when they called Easter Monday”Good Monday…or whatever it’s called”. It made me smile, partly because it was so genuinely un-self-conscious, and partly because it reminded me that although the Christian tradition marks tomorrowas “Good Friday”, it’s important to remember that every day carries with it some goodness and some sadness, some joy and some suffering. In the midst of that sometimes complex mix, we might feel like we need some anchor points, some ways to remember what we are hoping for and looking forward to. So this Sundaywe’re going to make some symbols.

But first, we’re going to eat together. That’s a potent symbol in itself. It’s good to gather around whatever we bring to share with one another, to be consciously grateful, and to remember that none of what we have should be taken for granted. We’ll eat around 10:00 a.m. It’ll be a genuine potluck – we’ll eat whatever people bring.

And then we’ll have our Easter gathering. It’s going to be pretty “hands on”, and perhaps just a bit messy, so take that into account when you decide what to wear. Symbol making, like the lives we represent with them, can sometimes require getting into the nitty gritty of things.

Our littles will join in the potluck (of course), and then they’ll be off to Kids Table for some creative engagements of their own.

Thanks for being part of this community. I look forward to being with you on Sunday.

Peace,

Tim Plett
