Reflections of an Amateur Anti-racist

This week has been a bit of a wild ride for me. For the most part, I’ve enjoyed thinking of myself the way many “white progressives” do…as “not racist”. This week, on the heels of what was for me the rather compelling experience of being at the Justice 4 Black Lives rally last week, I realized that view was overdue for an overhaul so I set out to deliberately seek some voices that would challenge it. Wham! Be careful what you wish for / look for! Those voices are out there, and they are passionate, powerful, intelligent, informed…and talking about ME as part of the problem. So this week in the Talky Bit I’m going to pull back the curtain on some aspects of what I expect will be the first stumbling steps in a long journey into being a more frequent, humble, and (hopefully) effective anti-racist.

We’ll meet online here at 10:45 a.m. for some music and Community Time, followed by the livestream Talky Bit at 11:15.
Just a reminder that you can post comments in that private Facebook space any time. I’m also reachable any time by e-mail (see our contact page). I’ve been enjoying ongoing email conversations with several folks from the community – a real joy for me in this time of not being able to gather physically. The Leadership Team continues to keep it’s eye on the unfolding developments regarding re-opening, and we’ll let you know when it feels like there are ways we can gather that both speak to our desire to see one another, and honor our commitment to caring for others by being safe. Tricky, as we all know.
In the meantime, we’ll gather this way and also keep posting the Talky Bits on our website…and washing our hands and wearing masks and not sneezing on one another. Onward…
I’ll see you on Sunday.
Peace,
-Tim Plett
