Where hope is located…
Take hope from the heart of man, and you make him a beast of prey.
OUIDA, A Village Commune
The Christian story and the God that Christendom follows have staked an awful lot on what may fairly be regarded as the least likely part of the whole narrative – a dead man coming back to life. If we grew up in the church, we probably think we know this part of the story. And maybe we do…but I think there might still be some treasures tucked in the tale, a kind of reward for the curious or attentive.
One of those treasures, it seems to me, is the place that hope is located in the story. I won’t tell you where I think that is, for the obvious reason that if I tell you now I won’t have anything to say on Sunday morning. So all I’m going to say now is that I keep finding hope in the resurrection story in two places – those where I didn’t expect it, and those where I need it the most. And both those realities help me to continue to become, as the opening quote suggests, more civilized…a better version of what God intended when he made us human beings rather than beasts of prey.
That’s what we’ll be exploring a bit more this Sunday morning. Come at 10:00 for coffee and conversation; come at 10:30 for our gathering.
Peace and joy to you,
Tim
