August 12

August 11, 2013

One of the things that travelling reminds me to do is pay attention to signs. Even when the route is familiar, as it was for us as a family on our vacation this summer, there are signs that we need to watch for, intersections that we forget from the last time we visited, or changes that have happened without our being aware of them.

And then there are the advertising signs. Often entertaining, sometimes humorous or ridiculous, and sometimes disturbing. The “disturbing” category often seems to be occupied by church signs. I saw one this summer that said “God’s love compels us to love you”.  That there could be a God whose love is compelling feels like good news. That this same God’s love creates the dynamic of “us” vs. “you” feels a lot less like good news, and a lot more like something that makes me want to run the other way.

This Monday we will gather at 318 ½ Ross (The Frame Arts Warehouse) at 6:30 p.m. to consider what it is about God’s love that might be compelling, and what it might compel us and others to do and be. I look forward to being with you.

Peace,

Tim Plett
