Thanks for the Break

Yep, it’s come to this. Taking my subject line inspiration from the back panel ads of transit buses. Desperate? Lazy? Clever? Stuck in traffic?

Well hey…we’re barreling toward Thanksgiving weekend, even if it’s felt like August for most of the last two weeks. And that got me thinking that we should take a break from all our “head first” exploring in and around doubt and faith, and just be thankful. So maybe the subject line should be “Break for (the) Thanks-giving”. Kind of like saying “the Google”, but still moderately witty?

Anyway, that’s what we’re going to do – stop the bus, get off for a few minutes and be thankful. And just to make it even more interesting, we’ll have a special guest who is an expert on thankfulness. We’ve gone to absolutely no expense to accomplish this, and you don’t want to miss it! We will also livestream and podcast, as usual, so if you can’t make it or aren’t quite feeling like in-person is a space you’re ready for, you can still be part of whatever happens. If you are looking for the Livestream, you can find it here.

Some important details about the “in-person” part of this:

Time and Location – If you are reading this on the web page, contact me for the address. You can reach me at tim@thetablewinnipeg.com. Park wherever you can, but if you know you need to dash when we’re done you might want to park on the side of the driveway before you get to the panel fence. If you’ve never been here, that will make more sense once you see the place. Otherwise, everywhere but the lawn is fair game. We’ll get started with some music at 10:45 a.m., and go from there.
Covid Regulations – As we’ve noted in previous blurbs, our desire is both to be together and to do so in accordance with the public health orders. Under those orders, all persons 12 years of age and older (including the hosts) need to be able to produce proof of vaccination or government proof of a medical reason for not being able to receive the vaccine. Scanning cards at the door feels a bit too “retail” to me, but as the host I’m also legally responsible to make sure everyone in the house meets those criteria. So…bring your card or phone code with you, such that it can be produced upon request. In addition, also as previously noted, expect to wear a mask indoors in situations where distancing or being in distanced family groups is not possible. Just how well we can distance indoors will depend at least somewhat on how many people show up. For my part, I would rather see a full house and folks in masks than an empty one with no masks. Also, at least some of our littles will be here, and we need to do whatever we can to act in solidarity with and care well for them, and for one another.
And speaking of The Littles – at present, we have one person committed to providing something organized for our youngsters on the dates we gather in person, and they are available once a month. That means that although there will be a space provided for the kiddos (and we’ll put out some things to play with, just like we did when we gathered outdoors), there won’t be a “program” this week. That’ll happen next time we gather in person, on the 24th. Supervision will be ad-hoc, as spontaneously organized by parents. In what feels like a flash-back to the olden days, you could always fire up your phone and listen the livestream, slightly out of sync with what you might overhear from the other part of the house. Anybody else grow up with a “cry room” at the back of the main gathering space (that would be the “sanctuary”, in some of our memories) with a tiny little speaker in it connected to the podium mic? That’s what I’m referencing…
If you are interested in helping the community provide something for our Littles each time we gather (maximum frequency of this commitment would be once a month; less often if we have more people involved), please be in touch with me. You can reach me at this email address or by phone or text at 204 232 4574.
Food and Beverage – We’ll know we’re really in the post-pandemic era when the Timbits are back. Not there yet, so bring your own drinks and snacks. Imagine you are going camping instead of to someone’s home, and you’ll probably be on the right track. (Can’t even tell you how lousy it feels to write that, and how much I look forward to being able to be in full ‘hospitality mode” when we have people over!) Bathrooms will be available, so you can “go without saying”. (I’m on roll – don’t try to stop me).
Last Things – There will be no “And Lunch After” because it’s an in-person gathering. However, there will be a Wednesday Evening Zoom Hangout. As the title suggests, it’ll happen on Wednesday evening. The time for that event will be 7:45 p.m. Got that? 7:45 p.m. 🙂
Here’s the URL for the Wednesday Hangout:

My typing tendons are tired. I quit.

I’m looking forward to seeing some of you in person on Sunday!

Peace,
Tim Plett
