Jesus On Fentanyl
Hey folks – As usual, a word about the subject line, followed this week by several significant housekeeping items. I would encourage you to take the time to read this one through, since some of the info is of a timely nature. But first, about that subject line…
The text “Jesus on Fentanyl” can easily be understood in more than one way. One obvious reading suggests that this week we will be considering what sort of an addict Jesus would have made. Another is that we might be exploring what the wisdom of Jesus has to do with the way the drug fentanyl (and it’s more lethal sister drug, carfentanyl) are sweeping through our culture, and what different responses to that might look like. We will be entering this exploration via a “story window”, in this case the story that is often called “the prodigal son”. Among other things, we will consider how the way you read the text has a considerable impact on what you think the story is about – just like our subject line. Despite the obviously heavy way I’ve framed it in this email, I hope we’ll find the consideration quite broadly applicable to our everyday lives, even if those experiences have no apparent or direct correlation to drug use or addiction. We’ll see…
Important housekeeping items: (stay with me now….don’t fade):
Summer gatherings might feel a long way off, but we’re exercising our optimism and planning as though that season is just around the corner. One of the perennial questions for us as a community is “When is it time to keep our summer gatherings on Sunday mornings, rather than switching to mid-week evenings?”. In the interest of making an informed decision, sometime in the coming weeks there will be a short (like – REALLY short) survey in your inbox on this matter. If that mechanism for gathering input bugs you, just come an tell me in person which gathering time would work better for you. Otherwise, when the survey comes, respond. We will make a better decision we participate in making it together.
Tax receipts – are being prepared over the next couple of weeks in order to assure delivery by the end of February. Some folks have made donations via the debit machine and not left their name or address info. No name or address = no tax receipt. So, if that matters to you, please let us know the details of your unmarked donations, so we can receipt you. You can contact me at this email address, and I’ll forward your info to Justin, who takes care of these matters for our community.
Our AGM is scheduled to follow our gathering on February 5th. Stick around after the gathering if you can. We promise to be brief and concise. There may be donuts involved…

There now…that wasn’t so bad, was it? I look forward to being with all you on Sunday. It’ll be better than the podcast…
