The meaning of "friend"

August 12, 2012

Hello,

This past week I had a long conversation with a friend, part of which was about friendship itself. He gave me a summary of the significant friendships in his life. They were few, but of long standing. The story was partly a celebration and partly a lament, as one of those friends was moving away and the change in proximity was a saddening one.
We live in a time and culture when the meaning of “friend” is being altered; when the virtual and real are blurring the lines of what it means to interact deeply and meaningfully as human beings. We need to pay attention to these things, not least of all because one aspect of our spirituality is friendship with God, and our understanding of what that means is significantly impacted by our broader experience with human friendship. This Monday evening when we gather we will be exploring a portion of the film “The Sunset Limited” that touches on these themes, and having a conversation about the interplay between human friendship and divine friendship. I look forward to being with you all!
Peace,
Tim Plett

Also, you don’t have to cook prior to church tomorrow because a few folks have decided to buy pizzas for us all to enjoy!
