The Cross or the Golden Arches?
I remember reading somewhere that the most common symbol in the world used to be the cross until it was displaced by the golden arches of Mcdonalds. I have no idea if that is a “fact”, but for me it connects with an interesting question. The symbol of the cross is ubiquitous – once you start looking for it you see it all over the place. Some of the places it shows up seem unlikely. What does a cross symbolize when it hangs around the neck of a gangsta rapper as part of a swath of bling? (Did I just write “swath of bling”?!) What does it mean when it hovers high above Winnipeg on a building tall enough that it rivals the Golden Boy for city=wide visibility? Does it mean anything in the culture anymore?
This week we’re going to wrap up our consideration of the Celts fascinating vision for the intersections between the visible and the invisible by considering their take on the cross. It might be an interesting exercise between now and then to watch for crosses and take note of where they appear in our time and place. There might be a pop quiz…
See you on Sunday!
Peace,
Tim
