Pastor Brain Stew

May 4, 2012

There is a part of my brain, which (if I could see it) I imagine would look like a roiling melange of song lyrics. From this lyric stew, there is one line that keeps floating to the surface. I believe it is from the song “Paper and Fire”.  The words are “I know there’s a balance; I see it when I swing past…”. I think it floats to the surface as often as it does because it’s just plain true for me, and the little guy in my head whose job it is to keep me sane knows I need to be reminded of this.

Or it might have come to the surface recently because The Table has such an excellent and caring Leadership Team, so that when the little guy in my head is off on vacation they stir the stew instead. This past week, a portion of that team gave me some of their feedback about the series we’ve been in (The Big Story). They did it in a way that I think any person (let alone pastor!) would dream of – tenderly, carefully, courageously. One implication of that feedback is that I want to step away from that series this week and tell you what it is that keeps me passionate about both the present and the future of The Table. I believe we have a unique place, and I believe there is a shape to what our community both is and can become that is essential in the world at this time. What I’m hoping is that my reflection this week can be part of our ongoing discernment of what that is.

So join us this Sunday for a quick dip into the stew of your pastors brain. If you find it not to your taste, you can always cleanse your palate with another cup of coffee…

Peace,

Tim
