Not Everyone Likes Christmas…

December 3, 2010

In fact, for some people, the “festive season” is one of the darkest times of the year, a time of struggle and despair. And yet, somehow, the Christian understanding of the message we make room for in Advent is that it is one of hope. How can we hold those two realities together, and what can we do to cultivate a life of real, tangible hope…and to offer that sort of life to others?

An ancient people tell the story of the elder who was talking about struggle. The elder said, “I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving, compassionate one.” And the disciples asked, “But which wolf will win the fight in your heart?” And the holy one answered, “It depends on which one I feed.”

It would be possible to read into this tale an over-simplified answer to our questions about how to cultivate and share hope. It is not, of course, as simplistic as saying, “Starve despair and feed hope”. This week, we will explore this question together in our Sunday morning gathering.

A couple of reminders as well: To the best of my knowledge, Becky still needs a ride on Sunday mornings. If you can help, contact me at this email address and I’ll put you in touch with her.

Also – remember to bring warm hats, mitts or jackets for us to share with the folks at Agape Table. The main criteria is simply that the items be clean and in good repair.

See you on Sunday.

Peace,
Tim
