The last time I spoke, I confessed that I had become obsessed with the section of Matthew’s gospel generally known as the Sermon on the Mount. Several months later, I can still say that I am still intrigued and at times baffled by this short, yet monumentally important speech delivered by Jesus at the onset of his ministry.
Lately, however, I’ve found myself focused on one very short passage, actually just one verse, a single sentence: Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” It seems to me that given how the rest of the gospel plays out, this verse says an awful lot about what Jesus came to do.
This week we’re going to dig into this one sentence by examining its presence and influence over some great works of secular literature that I hope will illuminate this seemingly simple yet enormously complex little idea that might just (all hyperbole aside) change the world.
Don’t forget that we’re meeting in the C gallery on Monday night at 6:30. If you come late and find that nobody is there, take a look in the green space across the street.
