This week the world lost a great man. His death won’t be a national news item; it might not even be a local news item. His name was Dr. Adebayo Olojuhngbe; Ade to most people that knew him. He is described by those who knew him best as a genius, advocate, awesome and magnanimous friend and colleague, boundless mentor, encourager, champion and friend. He suffered from sickle cell anemia, and chose as his career path not only to become a physician, but to become a highly specialized expert in his own disease. He knew he would die young, and so, as his eulogy put it, lived his life “running to a different Mission and Beat”.

Despite never having met Dr. Ade (and I so wish I had!), he had a real impact on my life. Dr Ade was, among other things, my father-in-law’s physician. Right from the start, Dad knew there was something special about this man. He felt drawn to him, cared for by him. It was a relationship that was about a lot more than competence. And because I love Dad, I felt grateful for Dr. Ade’s empathetic and loving care.

Last week, at Prim’s dedication, we opened up the idea of blessing others. I would say that this is how Dr. Abe spent his life. I also believe that this is how Jesus spent his life, and how he taught those that followed him to spend theirs. I think we could all stand to learn a bit more about how to bless those around us, so that is what I will be exploring in the teaching time this week.

Two Additional Details:

Our Sunday morning set up crew can’t make it this week. They have tried without success to find replacements. I will be at The Frame no late than 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning to set up. If any of you can make it out to help, that would be wonderful. If you know you can come, and would take the time to email and let me know that in advance, even better.

I also wanted to pass along to you some info about an event that is happening at The Frame on Saturday.  It’s called Cake ‘n Shake. The event takes place from 3-10 p.m. and is $15. That includes unlimited cake and sweets, a fruit milkshake, and the day’s entertainment (3 acoustic folk musicians, an edition of CaRaVaN Open Mic & Stage, and a vaudeville/theatrical performance in the evening). It’s a family-friendly event, and at the same time across the street, Frame and others will be celebrating Community Garden Day in the Centennial neighbourhood – another wonderful community event!

See you Sunday morning, 10:30 a.m., 318 Ross (The Frame Arts Warehouse).

Peace,

Tim Plett
