Peace Series Part 3

June 30, 2012

Hello community!

Anthropologists call the stories we tell ourselves and our children
about our past “origin myths”. When it comes to the matter of conflict
and peace making, our culture is dominated by a myth about human
nature that essentially says, “People have been warring with one
another since the beginning of time. Scratch the surface of
civilization, and you will get a Syria / Afghanistan / 911 / (fill in
the blank with a current conflict here). People regress all too
easily.”

But what if we have the story of who we are and where we came from
wrong? What if we don’t have to just fatalistically accept that
destructive conflict is an inevitable part of human nature? What if
there is an origin story that looks at the matter of conflict and
peace making in a completely different, more hopeful, way? And what if
that story has a remarkable resonance and “at home-ness” in the story
Christendom calls “the gospel”?

Now that would be good news!

It’s shaping up to be a beautiful long weekend. Carolyn and I are
planning to show up on Monday night at The Table regardless to talk
about pre-emptive peace making, and I do hope that some of you can
shake the sand out of your sandals and join us.  See you on Monday
night. Don’t forget to bring your coffee mugs…

Peace,
Tim Plett
