About Human Sexuality…
Well, it has been a while since we have spent time in the “For Your Consideration” series. In fact, there are folks that have joined us at The Table that have no experience whatsoever of this series, and to whom much of this email might seem like gibberish. It’s tempting to back the truck all the way up to that initial idea of shedding a six line narrative…but I won’t. (If that last sentence doesn’t mean anything to you, show up on Sunday. I will touch on it briefly – it has been an important framing concept for the series).
Instead of backing up, which religion is sometimes infamous for, let’s go forward. Forward into terrain that some folks find challenging and that others have already traversed, but that definitely takes us to places where there are a broad range of opinions, experiences and convictions. We’re going to jump right in this week with a conversation about human sexuality. Just so you know, this topic touches on the conflicted realm of straight / gay sexuality, but it goes well beyond that. We won’t get stuck in the rut of a mono-cultured, either/or debate – at least not if we can help it.
The following Sundays will have us poking around in questions about the end of time (you know…is God going to blow the whole mess up, or does the Bible say that Russia is going to come and take over, or is Camping finally going to get his math right…etc), and also the question of how to live well as followers of Christ in a pluralistic society. That should give us all something to not only talk about over lunch, but also to work out in how ever many days we are given to live, following that lunch.
One final matter. A big THANK YOU to those that jumped right in last week with needed items for Agape Table, and a reminder that this is an ongoing opportunity for our community to provide basic care for others. It might take a while for our habits to follow our hearts (doesn’t it always?), but we have made a good beginning. If you need the list of what to bring, it is on the website.
Peace to you this day…see you on Sunday!
