The Comfort of Ecclesiastes…

September 24, 2011

As I write this I’m listening to an old record album I have of The Byrds greatest hits. The song playing is “Turn, Turn, Turn.” Those of you familiar with the song will be well aware that the lyrics are culled from the famous passage found in the third chapter of Ecclesiastes. For those of you not familiar with the song, I’m sure it will be easy to find on You Tube or Grooveshark, if you’re curious.

Before I go off waxing poetically about the metaphorical implications of listening to this particular song on a turn table, I’ll do what I’m supposed to do and talk about this week’s message. As it happens, this week we’ll be discussing Ecclesiastes, a book which is approached by a tragically low number of teachers. I personally have been drawn to Solomon’s wise words throughout my adult life, most often during times of doubt and questioning; however, I’m returning to them this week in order to explore why, as of late, I’ve been finding his thoughts so comforting and, dare I say it, hopeful.
