This Week At the Plett Ranch

Mar 18, 2018
Hey all…so this week we’re taking that whole “road show” thing to the next level with a field trip to the Plett Ranch. Just in case I’ve been unclear, our place is NOT a ranch in any conventional sense of that word. It’s just not in the city, and it has a log gate over the driveway, and years ago someone called it the “Plett Ranch” and it kinda stuck. So there you go…no need to fear the livestock, which consists of one tiny (non-shedding) dog indoors, and a herd of deer that likes to wander through the back yard, and a couple of woodpeckers that just keep showing up. If you are on our email list, you will find directions at the end of this email, but if you want to do a quick drive time calculation, we’re just a couple of minutes from the East Gate of Birds Hill Park (Folk Festival Drive). If you are not on the list and are seeing this on the website but need directions, you can reach me by email at <tim@thetablewinnipeg.com> and I’ll send them to you.

Here’s the (very loose) plan – we’ll do something by way of a gathering starting at our usual time. It won’t be a typical Talky Bit, but there will be some focused interaction and we’ll sing some together as well. Kid’s Table – at our house, the basement is the “fun zone”, well equipped for creative play and adventure in general. Details t.b.d., but suffice it to say that there will be something for the littles while the less-littles are focusing on deep thoughts.

After that, a pot luck. As per our previous pot luck, this is full-on “eat what people bring”. You can bring hot or cold dishes (Ray tells me there may be a Black Forest cake emerging from his kitchen, so that food group is getting some attention). We will provide the dishes, etc. Plan to stay for lunch if you can, even if you don’t have anything to bring. Leave when you need to, even if that means not staying for lunch. End time will be open to some improvisation, but if you start to see members of the household wandering around in their jammies, you’ve stayed longer than good form would suggest. Point being – it’s flexible.

Other details:

Homework Club Update – this is a relatively new venture for The Table, so a brief explanation is in order. We (The Table) have taken a West End  / Core Area initiative that provides educational and personal support to the newcomer community under our umbrella. It includes several different programs, one of which is something called “The Homework Club”. You wouldn’t necessarily think that kids would be enthused to show up after school to do homework, but in this case they are. They show up for educational support, personal support, mentoring, encouragement…and in some cases, just to be in an environment where those things are present, even if they don’t have any homework to do. Short version of why I’m taking up space in your inbox with this – it’s working! Homework Club has more kids than the present number of volunteers can handle.

If you want to do something to help new-to-Canada kids with the transition into this culture, language, and educational system, then The Homework Club could use your help. No special degrees or subject specialization or certification required – just the willingness to show up to sit with kids and help them with their homework.
