Childhood stories…

January 28, 2011

One of the signs that you might be growing up is that you start to question the meaning of stories you learned in childhood. It can be an exhilarating exercise as well as a disconcerting one. After all, if the meaning of a childhood story can shift, what else might be up for grabs? Maybe everything I learned when I was little no longer applies. That would be seismic…

One of the childhood stories that has come up for reconsideration in my life is the tale of Noah and THE FLOOD. It’s been an interesting journey for me, and (at the risk of using up a perfectly good chunk of your Sunday for personal therapy), I’m planning to use that journey to frame not just a re-consideration of the story but a continued examination of the implications of evolving revelation – the idea that it is possible for us, both inside and outside of the Bible, to be people that are growing in our understanding of the character and nature of God. We will also connect this reflection to our examination of the question, “Is God violent”?

We’ve rearranged the furniture to make more room for deep thoughts (and thinkers of them), so come on out. What we haven’t done is get more coffee mugs, so in the interest of both having a mug that keeps your beverage warm and of not throwing a disposable cup into the trash, we continue to recommend that you BYOM.  (You’re smart – you work out the acronym).

See you Sunday,

Tim
