A late blurb

June 1, 2016

Good (very wet) morning, Tablers! The world is dripping, and also growing.
When I sit on our back deck, I feel like I’m in a rain forest – lush green
everywhere! I also feel a bit soggy. You could think of that contrast as a
small climatic example of the sort of tension that is a normal part of
life. We love the green; we don’t necessarily love the rain. We appreciate
strong and beautiful trees, but we are more ambivalent about the winds that
foster that strength. And so on…

This Wednesday (man, that was close…I almost wrote “Sunday“) I want to
wrap up our exploration of meaning maps with a bit of a “so what”, or
perhaps a “now what”, depending on your perspective. The idea of updating a
centuries old meaning map can be both exhilarating and daunting (there’s
that tension again), but unless we wish to hold a faith that lives with
it’s head in the cultural sand, it’s work we need to learn how to do. I’ll
be engaging with this question through some current concerns in the world,
including end-of-life legislation and beginning-of-life research, both
pressing moral and ethical deliberations that were in the news this past
month. These topics will serve as our entry point for asking what updating
the meaning map of Christendom might look like in the early going of the
21st century. I think it’ll be fun…in a “this is serious” sort of way.

On a personal note, this is the only week I’ll be with the community in the
month of June. Corinne, Cale, Tirian, Tayah and I are off on a family
vacation for the balance of the month. Tim Penner, Donovan, Andrew and
Kathy will be leading the Talky Bits during the balance of June, so whether
you can be present in person or catch up by podcast, we all have that to
look forward to, in addition to the very real benefits of simply gathering
to share a few moments of our lives.

I look forward to being with you all.  Wednesday6:30 p.m.…same location.

Peace,

Tim Plett
