Mask-free Halloween…
Hello Tablers!
Some of you have been around The Table long enough to know that I’m kind of a fan of the cultural happening that is Halloween. I’m a parent with at least one kid that is still of a “get dressed and get out there” age, so each October 31st we join the happy horde going door to door, greeting the neighbors and collecting treats. And the neighborhood we visit always has lots of lit up front porches and open doors, cheerful greetings, affirmation for the efforts made in costuming, and a lively candy-trading meeting when the collecting is all done. It feels like, on this one evening a year when the kids put on their masks, at least some of the adults take theirs off and make one another welcome.
At the heart of the Jesus story, there is a narrative of welcome; a story of an open door to community with and in God, with one another, and with all that is made. To me, that feels deeply congruent with what I experience at Halloween. So go ahead – take off your mask, and get out there.
And then, if you don’t have too big a sugar hang-over, come to The Table on Sunday morning. We’ll be considering why spiritual explorers should pay attention to this whole weekend, Halloween included.
And…its a Kid’s Table Sunday!
See you on Sunday…
Peace,
Tim Plett
