Walking In The Dark – God in the Dark?

January 18, 2015

“There is a tendency for us to flee from the wild silence and the wild dark, to pack up our gods and hunker down behind city walls, to turn the gods into idols, to kowtow before them and approach their precincts only in official robes of office. And when we are in the temples, then who will hear the voice crying in the wilderness? Who will hear the reed shaken by the wind?”  (Chet Raymo, The Soul of the Night)

Many of us have grown up with such persistent images of what constitutes spiritual light and darkness, with such overwhelmingly insistent input that says “Light is Goodness, Darkness is Evil”, that considering the possibility that God might be in the dark as well takes some real effort.

I believe that, unless we want to live in a world of diminished possibilities (spiritual and otherwise), this is an effort we must make. That may seem a bit daunting, but like many such things the most important step is the first one…we just need to crack open the door and head out.  So this Sunday morning, we’ll continue our exploration about walking in the dark with a consideration of the possibility that God is just as present in the darkness as in the light.

NOTE: This is a Kid’s Table Sunday. The next scheduled date for The Kid’s Table is February 8th.

See you on Sunday!

Peace,

Tim Plett
