Why God Doesn’t Need Your (My) Money

Many years ago (Does that sound old? Sure sounds better to me than “When I was young”…) a mentor told me that there are three things you shouldn’t “preach” about in church. And, if you decided to do it anyway, you should plan to finish your talk and promptly leave by the back exit. One of those three subjects was money. I’ll let you speculate about the rest of the list.

I get it. Money is one of the few surviving cultural taboos – we tiptoe around talking about it, even with people we know and trust. It’s “personal”. And how it’s been talked about and managed in religions over time is one of the main reasons people are quite reasonably leery of any conversation that involves ideas about both God and Money. Maybe this is a bad decision (my mentor would have thought so), but I don’t mind the occasion challenge. So this Sunday in the Talky Bit I’m going to tell you why I think God doesn’t need our money. I chose this Sunday because it’s also our Annual Open Meeting, and we’re going to be talking about money anyway. And I thought we could use a break from talking about anxiety. (I might be missing an irony here.) Plus there will be food, and perhaps drink, to help it all go down easier.

Here’s the plan for the morning – gather at the usual time and place (Creative Manitoba, 10:30 a.m.). Have our morning gathering, complete with the usual goodness, plus any appealing smells that are wafting around from whatever folks brought for the potluck. Eat together . We’ll eat whatever we brought – a true pot luck. While eating, enjoy our brief, enlightening and positive (am I overselling this?) Annual Open Meeting. No bombshells in the wings – just a chance to all consider a recap of the year together, in the same room at the same time, and to look forward to what’s ahead.
As you can probably tell, I’m not planning to say anything about money that means I’ll need to run for the exit. But, as always, please feel free to show up and be of a different opinion. We’re not going to stop exploring just because we’re talking about a cultural taboo. That just wouldn’t be like us now, would it?
