What Kind of Community Is This Anyway?

April 13, 2015
First of all, a great big THANK YOU! to everyone that joined us for our Souper Sunday breakfast last week. We had more than enough food, and an excellent time hanging out together. Special thanks to Judi and Bernie Bargen for coordinating that gathering, and to the Set Up / Clean Up crews for hauling the extra necessary freight. We’ll do it again before long – see “Other Items Of Note” below.
This weeks musings...
Given that Jesus arguably never was on a mission to start a religion, what might someone from his time and culture think of what we’ve made of his life and teachings?

Well, as you may know, I’m of the opinion that this is the sort of question we are not able to provide a definitive answer for. The original events and information are too ancient, too unclear, too “foreign”. If we think finding a singular, non-reducible answer is our mission, that might seem like bad news. But if we suspect that our mission is more along the lines of being reminded to keep on exploring, seeking, questing or pondering, then we may find that thought encouraging and motivating.

This week, we’ll continue on the path Tim Penner set for us last week with his suggestion that Easter doesn’t “solve everything”. We will do that via some dialog between an imaginary guest from the time of Jesus and our own community at The Table. In particular, we’ll be exploring the question of what kind of community Jesus might have been setting in motion through his teachings and his example.

It’s an experiment. I suppose you’ll have to be in the room to see if it works or not.

Other Items of Note:

May 24th – our last Sunday morning gathering before we switch to Wednesday evenings for the summer. This will also be a “Souper Sunday, and a parent/child dedication.

September 13th – our first Sunday back to a.m. gatherings, and a picnic! Details will follow.

See you on Sunday!
Peace,
Tim Plett
