This Week at The Table

May 11, 2014

Have you ever noticed how sometimes it seems like suddenly you are seeing the same name or thing or brand almost everywhere? I remember feeling that way about the American essayist and novelist Annie Dillard. Within a fairly short period of time, it seemed like I was encountering her name, and seeing her work quoted, in the majority of the other things I was reading.

The reasons why we might have that kind of experience are too many and too complex to even have a shot at in “the blurb”. However, when it does happen we should probably pay attention and give a little energy to figuring out why it’s happening and what it might point us toward.

This week we are going to do a bit of initial exploring in the only parable of Jesus that gets this kind of attention in the Bible – the parable of The Sower. It shows up in all the books in the Biblical library that claim to tell the story of the same part of the life of Jesus, and in each of these it is given a disproportionate amount of attention. So…that’s a clue that we should explore (see above re: appearing everywhere).

And, as a seasonal bonus, it is a parable about gardening. But it isn’t about Mother’s Day…sorry. I tried to find that in there, but I couldn’t. So unless you are a Mom that likes to garden, you might feel like the pastor missed his cue, for which he apologizes in advance.  However, we will have free coffee for everyone that either is (or has) a mom.

See you at 10:30 a.m. at 493 Notre Dame.

(And no, the store will not be open for last minute Mother’s Day gift buying. We refuse be co-dependent enablers of your lack of forward planning).

Peace,

Tim Plett
