This Week at The Table
In the midst of my curling game last week, I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. Whether it was from physical indigestion or a guilty conscious, I couldn’t tell. But likely both. En route to the game, I was in a pinch for time with a growling stomach and a light wallet. Just then, I saw what would be my sodium-rich solution: the Burger King. Suffice it to say, the “BK lounge” left both my digestive tract and my morality in an unsettled state.
What is it about our consumer choices that can leave us with lingering guilt? Whether it’s a trip to the outlet stores, the food court or even the gas station, we can easily feel like we have participated in something detrimental to the world around us. We know that by virtue of being alive we are all consumers. We need food, clothing, transportation, etc. Yet on some level many of us fear we are sending the planet into a nose dive because of our choices.
This Sunday we’ll begin to discuss whether or not there is any legitimacy to those feelings, keeping in mind the spiritual/economic act of a poor widow (Mark 12).
Note: If you don’t want your consumer choices challenged, it might be a good morning to sleep in…
If that disclaimer hasn’t scared you off, we’ll see you at 493 Notre Dame on Sunday at 10:30!
