This Week At The Table
I was outside earlier this week, enjoying the rather delightful warmth we experienced and thinking about spring. In contrast to my happy thoughts, I was listening to the fine Canadian husband and wife duo Whitehorse singing the song Cold July which is about an overdue relational thaw. Maybe it was that combination, together with the physical experience of warm sunshine on my face and three feet of snow under my feet that got me re-thinking the place of God in our human dilemmas. Or maybe it was driving to work past hundreds of geese standing around in a frozen field, looking like they wanted a refund on their tickets to the Great White North.
However it happened, what stuck in my head was the thought that if the sunshine on my face feels like the warmth of love, then the overdue thaw can feel like the curse of rejection, and if God has anything to do with all of this then it’s not so hard to imagine why good weather could = “Somebody up there likes you”, and bad weather = “Somebody up there must be mad…”
Last Sunday we rather spontaneously started a conversation about the wrath of God. It’s a bigger topic than simply “Is God angry?”, and worthy of further exploration. So this Sunday, we are going to continue that conversation. John and Trevor are going to join me for a “spiritual conversation” about the anger of God. Timely, in light of both our slow moving physical thaw, our marking of Lent, the late date for Easter, and what seem like our innate fears among other things.
Housekeeping Matters
Good Thursday (April 17th) – We will meet at The Table at 8:00 p.m. This gathering will be much shorter than our usual time together, and will not include our usual “soft entry” of lots of time to chat. I would encourage you to come on time to this one if you are able, and expect a time that includes more silence than usual.
Easter Sunday morning (April 20th) Potluck Breakfast– come for 9:00 a.m. and bring what you wish. If you have questions, talk with either Karen Johnson or Jane Penner.
The Kids Table – next dates are April 20th and 27th. If you are interested in helping Amy and our community offer this “kid friendly” gathering on a weekly basis, talk with Amy.
See you Sunday morning, 10:30 at 493 Notre Dame. It’ll be warm inside…
Peace,
Tim Plett
