The Wisdom of Non-Discrimination (and) a Two-Treat Sunday

Aug 24, 2025

When we gather this Sunday (10:45 am, V.A. Cafe), we’re going to enjoy two treats. Well, we’re going to enjoy more than that, but our gathering will include two components that aren’t always present.

We’ll start with some Community Time and some shared silence to hold what is shared. One of the things I deeply appreciate about The Table is that we do this almost every time we’re together. The world is full of desperately lonely people. Just this morning I had a chat with someone who would describe themselves that way and was reminded that when we don’t have substantial connections with others, it can be hard to even find a reason to keep on living. We get to tap into this much-needed experience every time we’re together. What a gift!

And then (treat #1), music! It’s been a while, and I’ve missed it. It’s one of the unique ways we connect as humans, and (bonus), it’s fun.

Followed closely by treat #2, which is a very thoughtful (and honestly kinda famous) “guest”. Thich Nhat Hahg (Vietnamese monk and peace activist) will be our virtual speaker, sharing his insight into the wisdom of non-discrimination. As he will illustrate, this is the same thing that we’ve been calling equanimity. It’s a lovely, gentle, and yet deeply challenging reflection on how equanimity might be the only path to peace. Even if we weren’t in the middle of exploring these ideas, that sounds pretty timely to me.

If you are not able to join us in person on Sunday, or just want to get a head-start on what we’ll be considering, you can find the video here. We’ll be watching it together and having some conversation about the ideas Thich Nhat Hahn is sharing.

And last but not least, a reminder to support The Table financially if you are able to do so. We’re short on funds, and “many hands make light work”, so the more of us share this part of our life together, the better. Follow this link for more information on how to make a tax-receiptable donation.

I’ll see you on Sunday!

Peace,
Tim Plett
