The Evolution of Hope

Mar 24, 2019

Hey folks. Everyone once in while it feels we like stumble onto coalescing “idea streams” in our explorations at The Table. I’m not sure how it happens. It sometimes feels like a “which came first – the chicken or the egg” experience. Did we start having a shared feeling about wanting to explore a certain topic and then dive in, or did we start exploring and gain momentum, or are some ideas just floating around in the zeitgeist and lots of us are bumping into them, or….? (As an aside, your input regarding what we might choose to explore is always welcome. Email me at this address). In any case, it seems like lots of us are pondering the nature of “hope” these days. I suspect that part of it is because our surrounding culture is wresting with what hope means and what it looks like to live hopeful lives while feeling immersed in the confounding combination of carefully curated “I have a perfect life” social media accounts and mass media messages of doom and gloom. I think some of us are grappling with this subject because our own faith systems are evolving and the framework of “place your hope in another time and place” is starting to show some cracks. And frankly, there could be lots of legit reasons to find questions about hope challenging, ranging from having a “glass half empty” personality to facing deep personal or cultural crisis.

This week, Justin van Oeveren and I will be having a conversation about his personal journey in the land of evolving hope. It’s a story that includes themes of faith shift, family systems in flux, apparently intractable suffering and personal commitment to caring for others. I’m looking forward to chatting with Justin, and I hope you can join us.
Kid’s Table will be on (no spring break for our Littles!), and we’ll be gathering at Creative Manitoba (245 McDermot Avenue, fourth floor) at 10:30 a.m.
I look forward to being with you all.
Peace,
Tim Plett
