Religious Fruit Salad

Feb 9, 2020

Whoa…what?! Maybe I’ll come at this a different way. One of the things many “belief explorers” encounter as a challenge are the often exclusive claims made by belief systems. “Our way is the only right/true/efficacious way to God”, or to fit in on a bumper sticker, “Our God Wins!”.  Of course, when you have more than one world view making such a claim, something has to give. So what happens when you take a belief system that doesn’t make any such claims, and sit it next to one that often does? Welcome to the wild and wooly world of considering the relationship between Buddhism and Christianity. This Sunday in the Talky Bit we’ll begin an exploration of that very big topic. By the way, if you’re looking to hear a Christian preacher tell you what’s wrong with Buddhism and right with Christianity, let me suggest you either pull the covers up over your head and get what my mom likes to call “some more beauty sleep”, decide to show up with your mind as open as possible to a different perspective, or maybe just go elsewhere. That won’t be the tone of this exploration.

And about that fruit salad…you’re a smart person; what do you think that subject line is about?  I’ll offer my take on Sunday.
Significant Details:
– Kids Table is ON!  And yes, that is a change from what we said previously because our Kids Table team has a new addition which means less “black out” dates for our littles. Whoop!
-Souper Sunday Potluck and AGM will take place after our gathering on Sunday, February 23rd. If you can, plan to stick around for good food, good company, and our version of an AGM. We’ve got a few more community oriented details to cover this year, and it would be lovely to have you there. Please feel free to attend whether you can make a potluck contribution or not. This is for everyone.
We’ll meet on Sunday around 10:30 a.m. at Creative Manitoba (245 McDermot Ave – 4th floor). If you are planning to drop by for the first time, “around 10:30” means we’re not very precise about our start time. That said, we try to be pretty predictable about being done by 12:00 noon, because while it seems to feel good to be casual about when you have to show up, it matters to know when things end.
We’ll make coffee, the timbits supply chain will show up with balls of sugar, the fishies will show up with flukes of salt, and the people will show up with…well, whatever they show up with. It’ll be good to be together.
I’ll see you on Sunday.

Peace,

Tim Plett
