Nuanced Compassion Part 5 – Of Hostility and Kindness
Feb 26, 2023
Headlines first:
-In person at 170 Scott, 10:45 a.m., Kids Table, Music, Community Time – all the moving parts! Also, we’ll livestream to our Facebook page here, and post a podcast to our website here.
And now, the details:
First of all, check out the poll on our Facebook page to weigh in on naming this particular iteration of our gatherings. Yes, we’ve launched a fully democratic process for making this decision. If you grew up in a congregation-led church (you know who you are), this is as close as it gets at The Table. Be a good citizen and only vote once. Last time I checked in it was a dead heat. You might have to scroll down a bit to find it, but it’s there. The winner gets bragging rights and a chance to pick a Timbit before the Littles get their wee paws in the box. 🙂
We’ve updated the “About” section on our website. Check it out and send me feedback if you wish to. We all know The Table can be an interesting place to describe, not least of all in print, so revisions are ongoing. This is one of the first places people go to check us out online, so try to see it through that lens. Also, if there are any aspiring designers out there that want to have a shot at making a rainbow version of our main logo, let me know. I think that might help clarify what I’ve written regarding gender and sexuality on the site.
The Talky Bit this week will be parsing the last of the “far enemies” of compassion, which is hostility. We’ll take a bit of a detour through some consideration of what constitutes kindness, because it turns out that’s part of the antidote to hostility. How about that…:)
Next Sunday is an alt.Sunday, and it’s “waffle time”. Show up hungry for breakfast and conversation, because that’s what’s on the menu. For those with some institutional memory, this is kind of like a “Souper Sunday”, but without soup. I’ll send out more foodie details in the blurb next week, but the biggest piece is already in place because Judi has volunteered to make us all waffles. If anyone has gluten allergies or sensitivities, please let me know by replying to this email so we can make sure we have some waffles that won’t take you out.
That’s it for now. I’ll see on Sunday.
Peace,
Tim Plett
