Hidden In Plain Sight

Sep 17, 2023

Hey folks – this is an alt.Sunday, which means that we can expect the unexpected. This week we’ll be watching an award winning Canadian short film called Feelings of Invisibility. It is the story of Anne K. Abbott, a woman with cerebral palsy. And a heads up – in addition to the theme identified in the film’s title, this powerful piece deals with themes of human sexuality, systemic abuse of persons with disabilities, and loss, including the loss of a child. It also addresses itself to matters of friendship, romantic love and purposeful living in the face of hardship. I find it both remarkably beautiful and also quite challenging to watch.

Our time together will include viewing the film and discussing some of the themes it raises. If you wish to preview the film (perhaps to discern your own level of comfort with viewing and discussing it in a group setting) or if you are someone who joins us remotely (we are not licensed to stream the film, so it won’t be part of our morning livestream), you can find it online here.

By way of some logistical details – we will meet as usual at 171 McDermot Avenue, the home of VA Cafe. We will get underway at 10:45 a.m. with some time to breathe and be still together, followed by Community Time and then the film and discussion. We will livestream the first part, but not the film and discussion. If you are not able to be there in person but wish to view the film and contribute some observations or comments to the discussion, please post them to our Facebook page, which you can find here. I will bring them into the conversation following the film.
I’ll see you on Sunday.
Peace,
Tim Plett
