Can We Talk? (An alt.Sunday, supersized!)

Dec 1, 2024

Hey folks. Welcome to (what feels like) winter! A bit of snow, a fair bit of cold, and whammo…winter has arrived. There’s a lot of seasonal music at the mall, often with messages about peace and joy that seems at odds with the general emotions being emitted by harried shoppers and beleaguered retail staff. (Also, I’ve completely lost count of how many “Black Fridays” there have already been. Bah, humbug!)

In any case, we are launching into this season with an alt.Sunday which means it’s going to be whatever my alt.brain came up with for the week. But that’s not all! Throughout December, starting with this Sunday, there will be special and unique Kids Table events on the agenda. I won’t say anything more about that, except that I have it on good authority that seasonal themes and unbounded creativity have both been invited, and when you stir in what our “kids” bring, the results are bound to be fabulous!

What I’ve been musing about is perhaps less wondrous. It’s our generally declining collective ability to have conversations with people that see the world differently than we do. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to see this as “somebody else’s problem”, and I think we should not only talk about it but maybe even practice something different. Like, on purpose, as in “do an exercise that might limber up some civility muscles”. So come prepared for both some reflecting and some muscle building (metaphor on that last bit, so no workout wear required).

We’ll start at 10:45 at VA Cafe. We’ll livestream the first bit (Community Time) here, and depending how it goes we might podcast this one here. Unless the crowd gets too unruly, because nobody should have to listen to a podcast of that kind of racket. 🙂

I’ll see you on Sunday.

Peace,
Tim Plett
