The How-To Not Everybody Wants

Nov 9, 2025

One of the things I so enjoy at our in-person gatherings at The Table is the wisdom that comes my direction from the community. It’s particularly striking for me when it happens in the flow of things. This happened last week when we were poking around in Chris Thile’s story about his song Goddamned Saint and talking about changing beliefs when someone piped up and said, “Not everyone wants that”. When I look at it on my screen, it doesn’t seem like much…just four simple words that capture something kinda obvious – not everyone wants to examine, let alone change, what they believe. That’s true, of course. But, some people do. Also, some of us would say that our beliefs changed when we weren’t looking and we only realized it in hindsight, and we’re wondering if there might be a more conscious process for something so important.

Changing beliefs is complicated stuff. This week in the Talky Bit we’ll consider how we might go about it if we were doing it deliberately, as a choice. Not everyone’s cup of tea, as noted above. But for those who are interested in exploring what they believe, and perhaps even in changing what they believe, this might be right up your alley. Also (and if you’re part of this community you’ll already know this, but I felt like it should be made clear), this is not some kind of “bait and switch” where someone tells you how to change what you believe and then warns you not to do it. Go ahead, do it. But do it in a way that might help you get the most out of it. Head up, eyes open, on purpose.

We’ll meet at 10:45 am at VA Cafe. Kids Table will have a caring adult present, and as always we’ll start with Community Time, because no one should have to explore what they believe, alone.

We’ll livestream here, and podcast here.

I’ll see you on Sunday.
Peace,
Tim
