Just Imagine Compassion…Part 1

Jan 15, 2023

Note: this is an “online only” Sunday, so do NOT show up at 170 Scott unless what you really need is some quiet time in a snowy parking lot. We’ll be back there in person next week, but this time we’re meeting on the wide web of the world. Details later in this email.

This week I would like to expand a bit on some of the ideas we considered in our first gathering of 2023. In particular, I want to begin an exploration of the idea of compassion as a defining characteristic of a community. We’ll start with some history of the idea, including some of its unique twists and turns as part of the Judeo-Christian story. Honestly, it’s both more complicated and more interesting than I expected. I hope you’ll feel the same, but if you don’t you already know how to proceed – if the bag isn’t for you, don’t pick it up. 🙂

One unusual part of this Sunday’s gathering is the bit that comes afterward. As I mentioned in the blurb last week, I’ll be hosting a zoom hangout starting at 12:30, the focus of which will be hearing what you (and your littles, if that applies) value and imagine for the future of The Kids Table. Also, starting this evening, there is a dedicated email address set up for the express purpose of gathering that same kind of feedback. We’ll also be making this conversation the focus of our in person gathering next Sunday (the 22nd), so come prepared to be part of a community conversation on this topic in particular, and more generally on the topic of imagining some possible shapes for the future of The Table in general. As I said last week, these are not “planning” conversations. They are opportunities to enter the generous space of an uncertain future and let our imaginations run around a bit to see what we might discover.

And now, the details:

This Sunday – 10:45 a.m., online, on our Table Facebook page. You can find that here.  Afterward (starting at 12:30), a zoom hangout / consultation as described above. You can find that link at the end of this email.

The email address for adding your ideas to the conversation is <kidstable2023@gmail.com>, and it’s open 24/7. I won’t be replying to emails at that address; it’s more like an “idea drop off”. However, whatever you submit there will be taken into account as we work together at imagining the future.

Alrighty…I think that’s it for now. Fire up your browser and I’ll see you on Sunday.

Peace,

Tim Plett
