This Week at The Table: The Complexity of Simplicity

Jun 25, 2017

Tim is away for one more Sunday, so this week we’ll be hearing from Jason Miles. Here’s a preview of what promises to be a very interesting conversation:

Hey Tablers!

Hoping that things are going well. It’s Jason here, and I’ll be facilitating our talky time on Sunday. I’ve been mulling over the nature of faith lately. Having a little one year-old around has reminded me that we sometimes take the great mysteries of faith and distill them into simple songs like “Jesus loves me,” or “My God is so big.”

I read a chapter of a book once a while ago that discussed the ideas of simplicity and complexity in faith, and it suggested that in our cultural context, the faith community often tries to keep its expressions of faith and its beliefs simple. We toss out phrases like “God is love,” or “God is good,” and we repeat them like a mantra frequently enough that it seems like we’re trying to brainwash ourselves with those simple truths. But as we live and walk in the world around us, or the world inside of us, those “simple truths” can become quite muddled. If God is love, how can …? or if God is good, then why …?

Our morning will consist of some singing and some reading and some discussing (because I love hearing from the community), and we’ll talk about simplicity and complexity in faith, and how we can walk together through the things we face.

I look forward to spending some time together!

We’re meeting at Sam’s Place this week and remember that Kid’s Table is still on summer break, but that kids are, as always, welcome!
