The Justice Word…

October 28, 2011

saiah 1:17 reads:
Learn to do good.  Seek justice.  Help the oppressed.  Defend the cause of orphans.  Fight for the rights of widows.

Justice is what some might call a ‘buzz word’ in scripture.  It comes up again and again, and yet the meaning of the word could raise a lot of debate.  Justice is something that seems easier to recognize in its absence than in its presence.  We can see when justice has not be served, but it’s harder to determine when it has.  So, what does justice look like?

In North America we often use the word justice to refer to punishment of the guilty.  Justice has been served when an evil doer gets what they deserve. Is this the justice referred to in Psalm 37:28 that God loves?  Scripture talks about justice for the poor, justice for the orphans and the widows.
Psalm 33:5 says, “[God] loves righteousness and justice; The earth is full of the lovingkindness of the LORD.”  God’s loving kindness is noted directly following His love of justice.  What does this say about Justice?

This Sunday, we’re going to look at justice in scripture, injustice in our world today, and our role in seeking justice.

See you all then!
