Decolonizing Religion Part 5 (or Smushing Horizons, Part 1)

February 22, 2021

Not a typo, even though my truly unimaginative spell checker didn’t recognize the word “smushing”. You know that word though, right? It’s like what you do when you are prepping the bananas for making muffins. You smush ’em. A bit messy, but the muffins…mmm, mmm, good. But first, the smushing has to happen. Messy, not everyone has the stomach for it. You could even skip the “making muffins” part altogether and just buy some; let someone else decide what goes into the muffins you put into your body. Less muss and fuss, for sure, but also less agency and participation. Yes, this is becoming a more extended and less-explicit metaphor that might be about decolonizing religion, but I’m being intentionally vague because if I tell you all my ideas in the blurb, I’ll be all alone on Sunday morning when we gather here at 10:45 a.m. for music and Community Time, and probably feel it even more acutely when I start the Talky Bit after that and no one shows up. Maybe we should start a betting pool to guess what the blurb really means. Never mind – I told you right in the subject line. We’re going to be exploring smushing horizons. Silly…

Before this becomes utterly nonsensical, let me also remind you that you can show up at 12:15 on Sunday for “And Lunch After”, our Sunday afternoon chat about everything under the sun, or on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. for an even more laid-back version of that same concept. BYOL (bring your own lunch), remember that you don’t even have to dress professional on top for this one, and drop by to see some of the folks from The Table that you may be missing. You might find out that we’ve been missing you too.  🙂

Peace to you all, and I’ll (sorta) see you on Sunday.

P.S.  – someone in our community just sent me a picture of a church sign that read, “This too shall pass. It might pass like a kidney stone, but it’s gonna pass”. I suppose the funniness of that might be related to whether or not you’ve ever actually passed a kidney stone (I haven’t), but it struck me as pretty funny, in a dark, pandemic-ish sort of way. Hope it brings a smile to your day.  🙂
